Workshop Blurbs for Timothy Retreaters
Dating and Morality (ladies only) Jean Bassett The media, your peers, many entertainers, and even some current textbooks give the lie to the idea that anything you and your boyfriend choose to do is morally acceptable. As a result, it is easy to fall into Satan’s traps in a relationship. But God really does have standards and they have not changed! However, there are very practical reasons for His principles. The goal of this seminar is to provide some guidelines for those standards and introduce you to some reasons you may have never thought about before.
Can We Blame Racism on the Bible?Steve Bassett It’s been happening for a long time. People take an idea that flows from their own prejudices, fears, self-interest, or hatred and twist verses of the Bible so that the Holy Scriptures seem to support their unholy position. The nineteenth-century American slave economy, German Nazism, and modern white supremacy movements each have had apologists who sought to perpetuate the notion that the Bible endorsed their racist ideas. While we rightly condemn such misuse of God’s Word, thoughtful consideration of this phenomenon should occur at two levels. As those who belong to the Christ who died for all, we need to be aware that this tendency remains alive in our culture (and in the Church?) today. Also, on a personal level, I need to recognize how easy it is for me to take my own ideas and preconceived notions to the Bible, rather than letting the Scriptures speak God’s thoughts to me. In this seminar, we will examine and discuss specific case studies in which people tried to support racism through misapplication of the Scriptures and refute them by applying principles of proper Biblical interpretation.
Personal Money Management Phil Boom In case you haven’t noticed, things became a little shaky out in the real world recently. There’s a lot of bad news about “the economy”, jobs layoffs, credit problems and bank failures. A lot of poor financial decisions were made over the last few years, and now many people are paying the price. Do you want to learn what God’s word has to say about managing your money, and avoid the pitfalls and financial problems that can cause so much havoc? In this seminar we will look at Biblical financial stewardship, or how to manage your finances according to the principles of God’s word.
Some of the topics to be discussed include Biblical basics about your possessions Developing a financial plan Managing income and expenses Credit, borrowing and debt Introduction to investing for the future and insurance The end-game – will you be found faithful?
Relativism: Feet Planted Firmly in Mid-Air Fred Green and Josh Nixon Allan Bloom, author of the landmark critique of American education The Closing of the American Mind, starts his analysis this way: “ There is one thing a professor can be absolutely certain of: almost every student entering the university believes, or says he believes, that truth is relative. If this belief is put to the test, one can count on the students’ reaction: they will be uncomprehending. That anyone should regard the proposition as not self-evident astonishes them, as though he were calling into question 2+2=4.” (Quoted from Greg Koukl in Relativism: Feet Planted Firmly in Mid-Air) In this seminar Fred will open with a brief talk on moral relativism; Josh, a relatively recent graduate, will follow and relate some of his experiences with relativism in and outside of the classroom at the university level. Our goal is to inform those who may be interested in engaging other students informally in discussions about relativism with a view to offering a biblical alternative.
Finding the Person of PeaceLisa Heinbach The Lord speaking to his disciples said, “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.” (Luke 10:5-6)
Who might be the person of peace in your school, residence hall, or the fraternity down the street? Who might it be in your family, work place, or neighborhood? Around you God is at work drawing people to Himself, and He has not only called you to be His disciple, but also to make disciples. Come ready to dig into God’s Word and identify people of peace that Jesus and his disciples encountered as well as hear present day examples. Explore the possibilities locally and globally that you have to seek out the people of peace God might have you encounter.
Three Interesting Characters in PhilemonStefan Johnson Join us for an interactive study of the book of Philemon. Paul, Philemon, and Onesimus will teach us different lessons about relationships, leadership, social injustice, evangelism, the power of the Gospel, and more! This workshop will also give some ideas for personal and group Bible study.
Basics of Christianity John Lyman Know the basics! Can you provide convincing statements to these common challenges to Christianity? Why should we trust the Bible? Is the Christian God really that much different from the god of Islam? What difference is there between being the most highly developed animal and being a separate unique creation by God? Why are some acts considered so bad and classified as sin which affect our eternal destiny? Why does one have to be “saved?” Are there really other intelligent beings in the universe having no physical bodies? Why is the Church so special and do I have to belong to it? What is the future of this earth? Is Obama any relation to the Bamah mentioned in the Bible?
The Gospel According to IsaiahAndrew Nunn Isaiah is the Old Testament book that is most quoted in the New Testament! We will look at the key passages in Isaiah that outline God’s plan for the “Good News” even for the Jewish people who lived 8 centuries before Christ came to earth. We will look at some of the prophecies that pointed forwards to the coming of the Messiah, and show how many of these have already been fulfilled in Christ, while others are yet to be fulfilled. We will also look at some key verses that challenge us to trust in the Lord and serve Him with all our heart.
Leadership – A Life in FocusDennis Siler Want to have your life in focus? Want to lead God’s way? Come and be challenged to life your life to the fullest by some biblical reminders with some practical applications that help to direct your life while serving others. This session is intended for those who are up-front type of people as well as those who are quiet leaders as well.
Note: This is an overview of “Life in Focus” - a three-day training program being used for leaders in ministries and the business world.
Real Faith as I Follow ChristMatt Siler If faith is not REAL, faith is FAKE. When Jesus told His disciples to FOLLOW Him, He was serious, and so were their consequences. The Word of God is clear as to our devotion unto our Lord and Savior, and we are commanded to “work out our salvation,” and “be doers of the Word.” We must realize what this means for each one of us.
Critical ThinkingCody Van Ryn Ever wonder why everyone seems smarter than you? Other than for Ken Habel, there’s no reason you can’t at least sound smart. Come enjoy a crash course on critical thinking. In this interactive workshop, you will learn interesting terms like Bloom’s Taxonomy, including its definition and application! Learn some of the fallacies in thinking and how to avoid them as well as point them out to others in a heated conversation over which version of the Office is better, or perhaps more importantly, in spiritual discussions. Christian culture continues to breed non-thinkers, and like the Bereans who went back to Scripture after hearing Paul speak, we need to start thinking critically with the brains God gave us. Peter Grul and Cody Van Ryn have spent the last few days working on this workshop, so it is bound to be a life-changer.
